In 2008, I heard about the Tumaini Home of Hope in Kenya and was moved by the story of one British woman’s determination to help children infected or orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

It seeks to give a safe and secure home, lots of loving care and comfort to these unfortunate young children between the ages of 0-5 years and it will be their home for as long as they wish to stay. ‘Tumaini’ is a Swahili word for ‘hope’.

Through donating a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Kush in the UK, I am excited about the prospect of us being able to assist the work being done by the dedicated people involved with the Tumaini Home, to give the children a happier future.
Thank you.

A Little Background

The Tumaini Home of Hope has room for 70 children. Plans include adding another storey to the home in order to increase capacity to 120, and to finish building a school on a site adjacent to the Home – so that the children have a sense of ‘going to school’.  The charity aims to provide education not only for the children of Tumaini but also for the children of the wider Bamburi community.

Mothers that are HIV positive or have AIDS often abandon their babies because they believe their baby has no hope. However, not all babies born to mothers with AIDS will contract AIDS. When tested immediately after birth virtually all babies born to mothers who have tested HIV positive will return a positive result. But an HIV positive result in a baby does not mean that it will develop into AIDS.

Medical research has shown that given time and adequate care conditions, which Tumaini Hope of Hope aims to provide, 60-70% can turn Negative and then those infants will have been given an opportunity to live like every child deserves.

'Since Tumaini opened in 2006, two children are now testing Negative who were originally admitted to the Home testing positive.

Tumaini Home of Hope is a charitable non-profit making organization.
